From Birds to Boudoir
I decided to learn Photography when I was given a DSLR camera for my birthday one year. I loved how the camera felt in my hands but I could only use it on the Auto setting and my photos were very disappointing. I think, I thought once I had a good camera that somehow I would start taking great photos. So I decided I would learn how to use it!!
I didn't even understand what aperture was at this stage. But I enrolled in an online IPhotography course. At first I found it difficult to understand but I persevered and gradually it started to make sense. I began photographing the beautiful birds in my back garden.
I am also lucky enough to have a gorgeous daughter who had done some modelling and I began to take photos of her as well. She was easy, she knew how to pose. Every time I mastered one skill it seemed there was something else to learn. I became obsessed with trying to understand light and bokah (that blurred background) and composition. I started a 365 day project. I started to see the world differently. I started to notice the little details and how the light changed everything.
I began to realise that I needed to learn how to shoot in Raw and edit my images. I began to learn Lightroom and was amazed at the control I had over the look of my photos. In the beginning I was a little over enthusiastic with my editing. I've since learnt that subtlety is key.
I had photoshop for over a year without using it. It totally intimidated me. But gradually I wanted to learn to do more with my images and I took courses and gradually started to feel comfortable with the interface. I was asked by a friend about a Boudoir session and I thought it would be fun. So I took a couple of courses and wow!!, there is so much to learn. Posing and lighting, advertising and marketing. I love it all and every time I do a photoshoot I learn something more.
Most of all I love it when a woman sees her photos for the first times and sheds a tear. So many of us suffer with low self esteem and have body issues. Boudoir Photography gives a woman some of her confidence back, when she sees how beautiful she really is. To be able to give that gift to someone, is something very special and I love to be able to do that.
